Prepping for Walking the Women's Mini Marathon
The VHI Women's Mini-Marathon is on the June bank holiday this year in Dublin. For the first time in my life I will be walking it. The fact I'm doing so is a huge achievement, brought about by my persistence, my husband's support, my friend's undying belief that I wasn't as sick as some others wanted me to believe. We plotted a way through the negativity and thanks to the help of my talented physiotherapist we are aiming for me to be fit enough to complete the marathon in less than 2 hours.
Part of the training is my Sunday walks with my friend, so far the above figures are typical of what we achieve. She is highly trained and has helped me to go beyond my fears and bring my level of fitness up. We do this walk in about 3 hours so there is a lot of work to do in the next two months to speed up and get my speeds and distance under the 2-hour target set by my physio. Now she is so good she'd run this and further with ease in less time but she is patient and I'm grateful she watches and guides me to achieve.
This walking journal I hope will inspire others to believe in themselves and if they think they are too old now they are in their 50s, think again. Unless there is an illness blocking you then get the right people who will help you achieve your fitness goals.
